What is Odor and What is Involved in Odor Removal?

What is Odor?

Technically speaking odor is cause by organic molecular compounds that are so light that they are easily made or maintained airborne. We could go on to describe them as aliphatic or aromatic, saturated or unsaturated, but we don't want to bore you.

Are there different types?

We have just mentioned four different types and characteristics, but far more important is if they are protein-based or otherwise. Protein-based odors, like rotting food, animal waste (and remains) and cooking odors fall into a specific class, requiring special action.

What if the cause is hid?

The vast majority of odors come from the metabolism of bacteria on the source material - the microbes consume the waste and pass a gas. At times, it's really that simple. Even if the source material is gone and the bacteria is microscopic, the nose knows!

Are there any basic steps?

To removing odors? Definitely!

  1. The source matter - the fuel for odor - must be removed at all levels: gross, fine and microscopic.
  2. The bacteria (and other microbes) must be killed.
  3. The volatile gasses in the air must be neutralized.

Common Methods?
